SALARES has a population of around 400 and is situated in the Axarquˆ‚a region, on the "Route of the Mudˆ©jar". It features the minaret tower of Saint Ann's Church (formerly a mosque), which was declared a National Historical Monument in 1979.
SALARES lies 58 kilometres from Malaga and 37 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 579 metres above sea level.
SALARES is an area blessed by a climate which, with its annual 320 days of sunshine, is considered amongst the best in Europe. The village is characterised by its whitewashed houses of typically Moorish design and for its steep and winding streets. This is a very peaceful village in the foothills of the Almijara mountain range, and one of the best-preserved in the Mˆ°laga province.
SALARES is of Roman origin when it was known as Salaria Bastitanorum. Later, as with other villages in the area, it had a history of Moorish occupation, Christian reconquest and Moorish uprisings.
The church still conserves the minaret of the former mosque, covered in sebka material and tiling, as its belfry, as well as several pillars discovered during its restoration.
The majority of the population earn a living from traditional agriculture. Both the harvesting of olives and almonds and the wine treading, are still carried out in the old way. Mules are still used for transporting fruit and vegetables and for pulling the ploughs.
Being a rural location there is plenty of wildlife, amongst many you may see a fox or a wild boar during your stay, it's an ideal location for walkers or keen photographers or somewhere for some peace and quiet away from the daily stress of normal life.
